Last week a midwife suggested that we let him tell us his schedule... so we gave it a try. It only took a day and a half for us to feel uncomfortable with the choices he was making. He would sleep for 6 hours, wake himself up and then eat non-stop for 2 hours, then be awake for 6 hours but unhappy almost the entire time, and repeat. It made me feel exhausted and worried about all sorts of things. How would my milk supply be affected, was he making himself sick by eating so much at once, was he eating enough, why was he so unsettled and unhappy while awake???
So, we are back to a routine of feedings every 3 hours... which means waking him up. We have a plan in place (parent directed feeding: a middle ground method between the extremes of scheduled feeding and demand feeding) for when he gets a bit older. All the books and experts say to feed a newborn whenever they are hungry. They talk about the importance of frequent meals to build milk supply and keep baby happy with a full tummy. They assume that all newborns will want frequent meals... we have not found any research or articles supporting letting a newborn sleep as much as they want.
So I pose a few questions: When can you start letting your baby sleep through the night? What were your newborns like? How often did you feed your newborn?

Every baby is different. Danny, Meghan and Sean slept through the night when they were one month old. Ryan only slept 4 hours out of every 24 for a year. Finally after a year he slept through the night. Kelly slept through the night from the first night she came home.(I think she knew she was the youngest of five and shouldn't mess with my sleep). If I were you, I wouldn't keep waking him up during the night. Sleep is a very important part of brain development and I think Parker has a pretty good system going. Keep waking him during the day so that he can eat every 3 hours.
Ou dr told us that once Verity had gained weight and was back up past her birth weight that we could let her sleep up to 6 hours at night. But still feed every 3 during the day.
I would feed V then let her be awake for about 10 minutes, then back to sleep for her. Then repeat. We did this until she was about 6 weeks old. Verity started sleeping 6-8 hours at night about 6 weeks. She had quite a growth spurt at 3 weeks and ate about every 2 hours. But I liked that schedule. She new when day was and when night was by how we were guiding her.
You are doing fabulous. Your mom instincts know just what to do :)
That first video is so cute because he just refuses to wake up. I just love sleepy little guys.
The first video is my favorite! He is too cute. I love how he puts his hand up in protest, "I can't be bothered..."
Kelly: If he's sleeping 5-6 hours at night let him sleep so YOU can sleep. Then keep him to that schedule during the day. You'll all be a little bit more rested.
That's what worked for us. Caderyn started sleeping 4-5 hours a night and we tried waking him up and it was just difficult and we were all cranky. Once we let him just sleep i was much better. Plus, then you're more relaxed and your milk supply is better because you're rested.
That's just my two cents. Hope everything gets better! Your little guy is such a looker!
After 3 weeks, Braylee was formula fed, but our pediatrician told us that if she would sleep, let her sleep through the night (like 6-8 hours) but to stay on the feeding every 3-4 hours during the day. You'll get into a routine :) I've always heard to never wake a sleeping baby! But, it's nerve-wracking and scary until you get into the groove. I can tell you are doing wonderfully, he looks AWESOME! :)
P.S. Just watched the videos...OMG...he is seriously such a cutie!! I love it!!! Those videos made my day!!!
